Vision: A Compass for Protecting Communities and Sustaining Quality of Life

The college believes that excellence in health and disease prevention begins with a holistic understanding of the environment and communities. The College of Public Health at Kuwait University is not merely an academic observer; it is the cornerstone of every successful health system and the first line of defense ensuring the sustainability of quality of life.

To clarify the true identity of this field for the public and new students, the fundamental difference between traditional clinical medicine and public health sciences lies in the following:

Traditional Clinical Medicine

Public Health Sciences

Focuses primarily on the sick individual after disease onset or appearance of clinical symptoms.Focuses primarily on the community as a whole, protecting it before disease occurs and anticipating epidemics.
Centers on diagnosis and treatment within hospitals or clinics.Centers on predicting epidemics, studying population patterns, and combating pathogens in the field.
Makes clinical decisions concerning the health of an individual patient.Makes strategic and legislative decisions concerning the health, protection, and future of entire communities.

Updating Traditional Public Health Concepts (Example: One Health)

The faculty adopts an advanced vision based on complete interconnectedness within our ecosystem; human health cannot be separated from its biological surroundings. Therefore, we closely and holistically link:

  • Human health: Protecting against communicable and chronic diseases and ensuring a sustainable lifestyle.
  • Animal health: Monitoring and combating zoonotic diseases that may spread between species and cause local or global epidemics.
  • Food and environmental safety: Studying food supply chains, climate change, and environmental risk factors (such as air and soil pollution) and their direct impact on daily

    quality of life.

Mission: A Beacon of Data and Smart Health Policies

The College of Public Health is committed to preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders and advocates by bridging the gap between scientific research and practical application concerning population health in Kuwait, the Gulf, and the Arab region.

Our mission is summarized as: "Transforming silent data and numbers into smart decisions and legislative policies that ensure sustainable health security and preserve the quality of community life."

We do not stop at monitoring epidemics or studying diseases; we train national and regional competencies capable of speaking the language of evidence and numbers to persuade decision-makers to enact laws that support a clean environment, rationalize resource spending, and implement structural changes and systems necessary to protect and promote public health across all healthcare systems.

Background

Substantial need exists for academic institutions that can provide Public Health education, training, leadership, research, and service in the Arabian Gulf region. To address this need locally, Kuwait University established a new College of Public Health and is developing its academic programs. In September 2017, the College launched its BSc degree in Health and Community Studies; and in September 2018, the MPH degrees in Health Policy and Management and in Environmental and Occupational Health. These initiatives are designed with the goal of supporting and enhancing health protection and health promotion both locally and regionally.
